However, spore syringes may be challenging to obtain apart from the rest of the growing materials. You’ll find spores in some that will be handy to plant in the substrate. Choosing the Right Variety
Once you are clear on how to grow psilocybin mushrooms, the next thing you should move on to is to decide upon the strain and species. For beginners, Psilocybin cubensis and the Golden Teacher are two ideal picks.
Although not too potent, these tend to be more outgoing, allowing you to get the hang of growing mushrooms. These will help you to get at ease to grow your own magic mushrooms.
When you learn how to grow your mushrooms, you should choose a species and strain. Psilocybin cubensis and Golden Teacher are a few regular ones for beginners. They are not as potent, but they are usually more forgiving.
Checking the Required Set of Tools
Check with your supplier for the following list of tools you’ll need handy to grow your own magic mushrooms at home.
- Twelve 250-Millilitre Canning Jars with Lids
- Brown Rice Flour
- Clear Box
- Measuring Cup
- Micropore Tape
- Misting Bottle
- Mixing Bowl
- Sanitation Supplies
- Several Paper Towels
- Small Nail and Hammer
- Spore Syringe
You need to prepare the substrate using a mixture of vermiculite, rice flour, and water. Separate the mixture into jars with spores added to them. The mycelia will eventually develop and will contain the filaments needed for the mushrooms.
After a few weeks’ courses, the substrates or cakes should be taken to a chamber to grow further.
Also, not to forget, during the entire growing process, hygiene is crucial. Mushrooms are vulnerable to mold and bacteria growth. As such, the whole growing process needs to be in check at all times to prevent the development of these contaminating agents.
The jars you took to pour the substrate need four holes each on the lids. Make a mixture of 32 grams of water and 85 grams of vermiculite. Add the mixture to a bowl and drain the left-out water. Then, mix 32 grams of brown rice flour with the compound.
Ensure not to fill the jars up to the brim and leave out 1¼ centimeters to sterilize them. Add some dry vermiculite on top of the mixture.
After filling up the jars, cover the lids with foil paper and with paper towels placed inside the cooking pot, put the mixture jars above the towels. Add water to the pot halfway to the jars and let them boil. Make sure the jars stand upright.
Also, please do not open the lids and let them steam for about 30 minutes. After that, let the jars cool down to room temperature overnight.
What could be the next step now that you’ve prepared the substrate? Well, here it is. Draw a flame to sterilize the syringe needle. Inject the syringe into the jars after removing the foil off the top.
Add the solution through each of the four holes for all of the jars. You can use the micropore tape to seal each hole afterward. Also, ensure to sterilize the syringe needle after injecting each of the jars.
After inoculation takes place, it’s time to let the mycelium grow. Place the jars in a dark place at room temperature. You will notice the growth of white mycelia in about one or two weeks.
However, check for contamination marks, such as strange smells or colors. If you find any, dispose of the respective jar immediately as some contaminants are highly dangerous.
If not, it’s good that you’ll have several colonized jars. Let them develop for a week more to make the mycelia even stronger.
Making the Growth Chamber
Get a plastic container and make holes on the lid, base, and sides. Also, let air flow below the box, so place a base under every corner. Then, add the perlite to the strainer and wash it holding it below cold water. Drain the water and add it to the base.
Continue the process until you find the perlite has moved deeper into the solution. When you’re sure, extract the dry vermiculite from the jars and turn each of them upside down. Remove the cakes as well. Then, let them soak in water throughout the night. Ensure to roll them in vermiculite. This will maintain the moisture.
Now, take the cakes and place them on the tinfoil. Use a spray bottle to mist all the mixtures and solutions and then place the lid on the chamber.
Make sure to maintain the moisture of the chamber consistently. It has to remain humid there. However, try not to let the cakes soak out. You can fan in through the lid for better airflow. Also, the cakes are fine without direct light.
Eventually, you will notice small white bumps that mark the onset of harvest time in 5-12 days. Cut the chambers near the base. Also, use them before they reach their maturity levels so that they are still potent.
However, if you plan to use them later, drying them would be the best solution. All you need to do is let them dry below a fan on a piece of paper. Make sure they’re as cracker dry, so much that they snap upon bending.
You can also use a dehydrator for the same purpose. This way, they remain potent. Another option could be to use a desiccant to absorb the moisture. Put the dried shrooms into an airtight container with a wire rack above it. This prevents the mushrooms from touching it.
Later, you can place the shroom on the rack and close the container. Once dried, you can put the mushrooms in a plastic bag to prevent the inflow of air. You can consider storing the plastic bag of shrooms in the freezer!
